Data Intelligence – Infiltration and Terrorists in J & K - 2023


Ministry of Home Affairs stated that the Government of India has adopted a well coordinated and multi-pronged strategy to tackle the cross-border infiltration. This includes tactical deployment of forces at International Border (IB)/Line of Control (LoC), use of technology like Surveillance Cameras, Night Vision Cameras, Heat Sensing Gadgets, etc., multi-tiered deployment along IB/LoC, border fencing, deployment of intelligence personnel to collect advance and target-oriented inputs on infiltration, ambushes and foot-patrolling by Army/Border Security Force (BSF), establishment of Border Police Posts for generating local intelligence and taking pro-active action against infiltrators.


The approach adopted by Government of India to tackle the cross-border infiltration has ensured a perceptible decline in infiltration. Year-wise details are as under:

This was stated by the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Nityanand Rai in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.


Terrorists Killed upto July 20, 2023


As per the Times of India, months of June and July have seen 21 killed in encounters with security forces between June 1 and July 20. In the first five months of this year, 14 terrorists were neutralised. Between January and April —four fatalities were recorded in January, three in February, one in March and nil in April, in May six terrorist were killed while in June 13. Till the 20th day of July, eight fatalities of terrorists were recorded.


Between January 1-July 20 this year and the corresponding period of 2022, there was a 73% dip in the number of terrorists neutralized.


35 terrorists were killed in J&K between January 1 and July 20, as against 131 terrorists killed during the same period last year.


The fatalities among local terrorists fell to eight during January- July 20 from 95 during the same period in 2022.


Foreign terrorists killed in engagements with security forces fell to 27 from 36 during the period under comparison.


The dip in local terrorists killed is matched by the fall in their percentage in overall terrorists currently active in J&K.


As on July 20, 109 terrorists were said to be active, which included 71 foreign terrorists and 38 locals as per the Times of India.


LeT Terrorists Killed


As per the Times of India, security forces in Jammu and Kashmir neutralized 79 Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists in the last two years quoting an official statement. 35 terrorists have been killed by security forces in joint operations in Jammu and Kashmir this year that includes 27 unidentified and five belonging to The Resistance Front (TRF).


In the Kashmir Valley there are several terrorist organizations operating that include Hizbul Mujahideen, Tehrik-ul-Mujahideen (TuM), Al-Badr, Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGuH), Islamic State Jammu and Kashmir (ISJK), Lashkar-e-Mustafa (LeM) and The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of the Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba as per the Times of India.
