Two Key Challenges Ahead for Sri Lanka’s New Army Chief

Sri Lanka’s new army commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva has two major challenges as he has taken up the appointment under controversial circumstances. The first is to overcome the stigma of allegations of human rights violations in the last phase of the civil war in 2009, Restoring confidence of the public in the capability of the security forces in averting another Easter Sunday terrorist attack is another priority for General Silva, There have been serious allegations against him of violations of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and International Human Rights Law (IHRL), US, UN, EU, Canada and local civil societies in Colombo have raised concerns over President Maithripala Sirisena’s appointment of Major General Shavendra Silva as the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army. He has however denied war crimes allegations made against him and the Sri Lankan President has refused to review the appointment.................
