PM explains events led to special cabinet meeting on abolishing executive Presidency

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe addressing party activists at Temple Trees today (22) made a special statement to explain the process that led to the President Maithripala Sirisena's call for a special cabinet meeting on 19th September to discuss a proposal to abolish Executive Presidency.

Cabinet ministers representing the minor parties in the government as well as ministers of ruling United National Party strongly opposed the proposal to abolish Executive Presidency when a Presidential election has already been called.

The President alleged that the cabinet meeting was held on the request of the Prime Minister while the Premier said it was the President who called the meeting.

"A group of civil society representatives met with me last week to talk about what our government has done and failed to do. I informed them that our party had passed a resolution abolishing the executive presidency in 2014 and that we would continue to advocate for the abolition of the executive presidency................................
