Masses protest in Sri Lankan capital demanding the President to reconvene parliament

A massive crowd gathered in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo today to show support to the ousted Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and protest against the President Maithripala Sirisena's unconstitutional power transfer. The hurriedly organized 'Voice of Justice' protest by the United National Party (UNP) Members of Parliament drew tens of thousands of party supporters to the Kollupitiya Junction today. Shouting slogans and displaying banners and placards party activists and supporters marched to the Liberty Roundabout and held a rally near the Temple Trees. The protest focused on the unconstitutionality of the appointment of Mahinda Rajapaksa as new Prime Minister by President Maithripala Sirisena triggering a constitutional crisis. Although more than 2,600 police and 10 units of Special Task Force commandos were deployed for the protest, according to an AFP report, the protest was peaceful.
