Japan offers Sri Lanka assistance to strengthen maritime security

Japan has offered to assist Sri Lanka to strengthen its maritime security in an effort to enhance the defense cooperation between the two countries amid the growing influence of China in the Indian Ocean.Meeting with the Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Tuesday at the Presidential Secretariat, visiting Japanese Minister of Defense Itsunori Onodera assured that the defense cooperation between the two countries in maritime security will be strengthened through the programs conducted between the two countries."A special attention will be given towards strengthening the defense cooperation encompassing maritime security," the President's office said in a statement.
