U.S. Pakistan Relations Stuck in the Transactional Trap

There was much euphoria in some quarters in Pakistan - mainly official on the visit of Prime Minister Imran Khan to the United States from 21 July particularly the meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. In India and amidst much of the policy circles in Washington there was disdain particularly after the proverbial Trump gaffes during the pre meet press conference related to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s so called request for the U.S. President to mediate on Kashmir and the US President Trump’s proclamation of being able to win ‘the war Afghanistan in 10 days with 10 million fatalities. A careful reading of excerpts of the Press Meet transcript of which was released on 22 July followed by statements made by both sides – officially as well as during media interactions denote that there is no fundamental change in the relations between the U.S. and Pakistan and Transactional Trap in engagement which has been the past trends remains in place. The top of the mind issue for the United States President at present is Afghanistan and Mr Trump and his advisers believe that Pakistan can play an important role in resolving their strategic dilemma of pulling out of the country while declaring victory.....................
