Policy Brief: Pakistan: India Outreach to Imran with Terror Caveat

The reality of the situation demands pragmatism rather than debating  Mr Imran Khan’s poll credentials - on support by the Pakistan Army and favourable tweaking by the judiciary. The vote has been in his favour, and the traditional parties have been marginalised thus India must reach out to the Pakistan Prime Minister in waiting Mr Imran Khan with the caveat of blocking cross-border terror. The question is not whether he can effectively dissuade the Deep State, Army and the ISIS to stop the flow of cross-border terror. Many even taller leaders have failed to do so earlier, and some like Nawaz Sharif have lost their jobs and possibly honour in attempting to resist the military’s inclinations to sponsor proxy terror outfits. It is a certainty that he would be leading the government in Islamabad for the next five years in a coalition where his Party Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) will have a sizeable majority.......................
