Bajwa Extension: Much More Than Regional Tensions

In a statement signed personally by the Prime Minister Mr Imran Khan, Pakistan’s Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa was granted an extension of three years. "General Qamar Javed Bajwa is appointed Chief of Army Staff for another term of three years from the date of completion of current tenure. The decision has been taken in view of the regional security environment." The general assumption is that current spate of tensions with India and critical stage of negotiations between the United States and the Afghan Taliban with President Donald Trump giving a thums up to a role for Pakistan in the process may have been behind the extension. If these issues were uppermost in Bajwa’s extension then the question arises why three years? Is Pakistan expecting for tensions with India to last for three years or the Afghanistan situation to remain in flux for this period? Or is no Pakistani general down the chain incapable of handling these challenges during this period? Quite clearly the reasons would be more internal rather than external including the survival of the Imran Khan with the Army and the ISI, both under Bajwa believed to have propped it to power.
