Iran Presidential Elections- Advantage Rouhani in the First Round

Iran’s Presidential Elections are to be held on 19 May. This may be surprising to many given the impression of a clerical state; however Iran has a very vibrant electoral system with elections for the Presidency, the parliament and the district council amongst others. While the Supreme Authority the Ayatollah is also elected by a narrow body of clerics the Experts Council, the Presidential and parliamentary elections are fairly free. In the Presidential elections if a candidate does not get 50 percent plus votes in the first round a second round runoff is held. The campaigning is intense and the politicking is even more so.
