South Asia Stability: After Sri Lanka is Nepal Next

Sri Lanka known as the pearl of the Indian Ocean was plunged into a political crisis with President Maithripala Sirisena replacing former president Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister and removing now former coalition partner Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as also dropping the coalition with the United National Party (UNP) on 26 October. ........................It appears that Nepal may also be facing political instability in the coming days with almost similar drivers as Sri Lanka – relations with India and China and intra-party rivalries. Besides, there are challenges faced in transition to a federal structure, an attempt to revive by the royalist-right wing parties and civil-military tensions. The deterioration of the political environment in the country is surprising given that the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) has a virtual two-thirds majority a rarity in the country’s divisive politics post-2006....................
