Nepal Key Political and Security Events in 2006

January 2006   Nepal remained on the boil throughout the month, with the Maoists ending the cease fire on 2 January and following it up with a series of attacks on government posts in the country especially around Katmandu, the capital. The Nepali monarchy continued to crack down on political leaders as agitations gripped the nation on 20 and 21 January. The Maoists continued their attacks on camps of government forces in Hatuwgadhi in Eastern Nepal on 27 January and in Palpa in Western Nepal on 31 January 2006. The Himalayan kingdom appears to be heading for a long period of turmoil in the year ahead. The state of the poor people of Nepal in the coming months is likely to be hapless to say the least with King Gyanendra donning the mantle of a modern day Nero.  ...
