India Nepal Relations under Mr Oli: Surmounting the Himalayan Challenge

The Left Alliance with the CPN-UML having 121 Seats and the CPN (Maoist Center) 53 seats has formed the first majority government in Kathmandu in many years. The two parties will unite by April thus merging revolutionary ideology of the Maoist Centre led by Prachanda the mastermind of Nepal’s Maoist revolution and Marxist politics of the CPN UML. Mr KP Sharma Oli, the chairperson of CPN-UML and a joint candidate of the Left Alliance, was appointed as the country's 38th prime minister. President Bidhya Devi Bhandari, a close associate of Mr Oli, has been elected as the President. The Left Alliance has formed the government in the provinces less in Province 2 in the South where the Madhes Terai parties are in power. One of the first diplomatic initiatives taken by Mr Oli was to invite Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr Shahid Khaqan Abbasi for a visit to the country ostensibly to revive the  SAARC which is in limbo after India boycotted the summit in Pakistan which was to be held in November 2017. Some analysts feel that Mr Oli may have well sought to invite a top leader from China as the first high-level visitor but could not afford to annoy India just yet. The first exchange of high-level visits between New Delhi and Kathmandu has been a long-standing tradition. Thus Mr Oli has sent a strong contra-indication.........................
