Maoists and Elections in India: A Failed Rebel Agenda

Left Wing Extremists who believe in power through the gun and to whom electoral democracy is an anathema attempted to disrupt polls with the first four phases held in the large swathe of Central India where they have strong influence in the States of Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha. The rebels used a number of  tactics varying from posters asking people to boycott the polls, intimidation threatening violence and attacked election activity including campaigning teams and polling staff. The campaign succeeded in disrupting the polling activity to some extent but the elections were held in all constituencies said to be areas having extremist influence. The people turned out in large numbers despite the boycott call by the Naxals. In Bastar for instance in Chhattisgarh which is said to be the most severely affected districts there was 57 % voting, whereas in most constituencies the polling exceeded 60 percent..................
