Left Wing Extremism in Bihar Likely Trends in 2018

Bihar saw a successful year of counter Naxal operations with no loss of security forces in 2017 the first time after 2005. The security forces on the other hand accounted for 10 Maoists in 68 incidents of violence which were also the lowest in a decade. 360 Maoists were arrested or surrendered in 2017. 16 Civilians also lost their lives in Bihar in Naxal violence in 2017. Times of India reported that “153kg of explosives, 261 detonators and 89 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) or landmines planted to harm security personnel were recovered across the state in comparison to 954kg of explosives, more than 37,000 detonators, 93 IEDs or landmines seized last year”. However, 2018 is likely to see an increase in violence as was evident in the first week of January when on Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan lost his life on January 2 in an encounter........................
