Emerging Pattern of Left Wing Extremism in India

Even as the Chhattisgarh State is going for elections this year a deadly Naxal attack which led to the death of 9 security personnel in a land mine blast on 13 March was a grim reminder of the looming threat of Left Wing Extremism in the Southern zone of the state in the Dantewada – Bastar belt. Sukma district in South Chhattisgarh has been the most violent in 2017 and the attack signified continued presence of rebels in this remote belt which is on the Chhattisgarh – Odisha border. A number of factors can be identified as cause of the deadly incident including heavy presence of Maoist in the forested zone, extension of road network under security cover providing the rebels a suitable opportunity to target the forces, tactical lapses by the troops on the ground who used a Mine Protected Vehicle which is against the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and so on...............
