Rakhine & Rohingya: Long Term Challenge for Myanmar Army

The upsurge of violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine province has led to justified alarm both within the country and abroad. Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army or ARSA launched coordinated attacks across 24 locations in the Rakhine province West of the country resulting in the death of at least 90 to include 11 policemen, one army personnel and several insurgents/their local supporters on the night of 24/25 August. The attacks were timed for launch within a few hours after the formal release of the Rakhine Commission report by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi. Rakhine Commission was requested by the Nobel laureate and leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD) government to investigate the situation in the province after a surge of violence in October and November 2016. Ironically the Report of the Commission is hugely in favour of supporting socio-economic development and citizenship rights of the Rohingya- a stateless community that has faced persecution for decades.
