Myanmar Army Fights to Force Ethnic Groups to sign the NCA

Fighting between ethnic armed groups and the Myanmar army has broken out again in Shan and Rakhine states after the military’s unilateral ceasefire expired on Sept. 21.

Ethnic armed groups including the Arakan Army (AA), the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and the Restoration Council of Shan State (RCSS) reported that their troops fought Myanmar military units townships in Shan State and at least five areas in Rakhine State.

The Irrawaddy reported that Myanmar military did not extend self-imposed truce in Kachin and Shan states blaming the Brotherhood Alliance of lack of interest in signing the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA).

“The Tatmadaw is a legal institution performing state defense duties. We can’t say one thing and do another as they do. We are not an institution that can chop and change like them. We cannot tell lies. The Tatmadaw no longer plans to decalre (truce) for the sake of ending clashes and permanent peace,” ....................
