Myanmar – Stability Trends and Projections August 2018

Myanmar faces challenges on multiple fronts to include political differences between the National League of Democracy (NLD) government and the Tatmadaw (Myanmar Army), growing international pressure for Rohingya repatriation and alleged mass human rights violations, outbreak of fighting in the troubled outer ethnic zone and marginal progress in the Third 21st Century Panglong Conference held in July 2018. Despite these contra-indicators on the political and security front economy holds potential for growth above 6 % as outlined by the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the Asian Development Bank. Quite evidently the process of political transition in Myanmar has considerably slowed in the past one year, particularly after the Rakhine incident. Importantly the fragile political transition requires the greater balanced support of the international community through leadership engagement both civil and military. Thus a deeper insight into the trends and projections is essential................
