China-Myanmar Economic Corridor MOU Signed on 9 September

Multiple media sources from Myanmar quoting a statement from the China National Development and Reform Commission stated that China and Myanmar have signed a MOU on establishment of the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor or CMEC which is part of China Belt and Road Initiative. The MOU was signed by Myanmar Minister of Planning and Finance U Soe Win and He Lifeng, chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). Two days later on 11 September the two officials also held talks to discuss implementation of the CMEC. Irrawaddy reported that, “the estimated 1,700-kilometer-long corridor will connect Kunming, the capital of China’s Yunnan Province, to Myanmar’s major economic checkpoints—first to Mandalay in central Myanmar, and then east to Yangon and west to the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone (SEZ)”.....
