Panchayat Polls Route to Political Normalcy in J & K?

The J & K Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Mr Shailendra Kumar announced on February 12, by-elections on a party basis in eight phases to fill up 12,650 vacant seats in the panchayats in Jammu and Kashmir. The by-elections to 35,029 panches and 4,483 sarpanches were held on a non-party basis in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir (which included Ladakh) in November-December 2018.

As a result of elections of chairpersons to Block Development Council (BDCs) in October last year, another 307 seats of panches and sarpanches fell vacant.

However political parties less the BJP boycotted the polls in November December most of the seats in Kashmir could not be filled., while several seats fell vacant as the candidates were elected to the block development council.  

Now, the election authority is planning to hold bye elections of which, Kashmir has 12,344 vacancies.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
