Jammu and Kashmir BDC Elections: Reinforcing the Naya Kashmir Political Narrative

Chief Electoral Officer Shailendra Kumar of Jammu and Kashmir State Elections Commission has announced that the Block Development Council elections in the state will be held from 9 am to 1 pm on October 24, and votes will be counted from 3 pm 310 of 316 blocks in the state will go for elections just a week before Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh are notified as Union Territories. 

The main opposition parties such as the mainstream party in the State National Conference and the national party Indian National Congress (INC) have refused to participate in these polls due to continued detention of Dr. Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah among several political leaders.

Meanwhile the Co-Chair of US Senate India Caucus has come out strongly against the restrictions that have been imposed in the State which may force the government to ease restrictions while at the same time indicate the BDC elections as a move to hold poll.

The BDC elections will be only symbolic as only the panchayat members will be voting in the polls with most of these in Kashmir Valley having lost touch with the respective constituencies due to threat to their lives, the credibility of the votes will be questionable. .......................
