Jammu and Kashmir – Testing Waters in Panchayat Polls

All J&K Panchayat Conference in a memorandum submitted to Governor has shown readiness to fight polls.“We have made it clear that Panchayat polls are purely a community-based exercise. Panchayats existed in the state when there was no government,” president AJKPC Shafiq Mir said. He said they had urged the governor to hold panchayat polls on a non-party basis. “We want to convey to all forces that we are not affiliated with any political party neither should any political party stake claim on us. Our decision to contest polls is only to ensure rural development,” he said. “Panchayats are neither an Assembly nor a parliament where we can make laws.” The last panchayat polls were held in J&K in the year 2011. 75% voter turnout was recorded when panchayat polls were last held in 2011.4400 Sarpanchs, and 29000 Panchs will be elected in the State as per Greater Kashmir.
