74th UN General Assembly Session: A Wasted Opportunity for Conflict Resolution

The 74th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 74) was held from 17 to 30 September 2019. The first day of the high-level General Debate commenced on 24 September and went on till the 30th.

A number of development issues were in focus with summits on Climate, Universal Health Coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Much was achieved during these events with national leaders committing themselves to the sustainable development goals, climate change and universal health coverage.

Programmes undertaken by various countries in these spheres were flagged with a view to exchange ideas and create a virtuous learning and experiential circle.

The achievements in this sphere at the UNGA were laudable, however core political  issues that has led to a world tottering on crisis in many regions remained unresolved.

From the Indian vantage point – three conflicts assume importance in the geographic context – Persian Gulf and India Pakistan and the US and China competition for global supremacy..........................
