Political Charade in Maldives Continues

An impeachment vote, opposition unity, post impeachment crackdown on the opposition and postponement of local elections marked the political charade in Maldives, here is a review of what happened in the past fortnight.  The Maldives speaker of parliament survived impeachment vote by what can be called as clever parliamentary tactics by the ruling party. First, there was a declaration of change in voting from the secret ballot to open votes. When some opposition legislators protest the same, they were sent out, while rest of the opposition then walked out.  No wonder the motion against Speaker Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed, a close ally of President Abdulla Yameen, was defeated as 48  MPs voted against and noe for in the 85-member parliament. The Opposition leaders first protested changing the usual electronic voting system just before the impeachment to an open one. An opposition coalition including the parties of exiled ex-leader Mohamed Nasheed and former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom had said some government legislators were expected to vote for impeachment. An electronic voting would not have revealed cross voting but by seeking an open vote the scope for the same was negated.
