Geopolitical Risks & South Asia’s Opportunities

In the North West of the regional complex there are multiple security and economic challenges faced by Afghanistan and Pakistan which have been greatly impacted by the conflict between the United States and Iran on one hand and Tehran and the Gulf Arabs on the other. GDP growth in both the countries is stagnant at below 3 percent and is not expected to see a substantial increase in the coming years. The two countries are extensively dependent on economic support by partners and international financial institutions. This will have attendant impact on security. Both countries are also undergoing major political flux. In Afghanistan Presidential elections on 28 September will be held against the backdrop of talks with the main anti government group the Taliban which has consistently refused to engage with the administration in Kabul. In Pakistan the Pakistan Tehreek Insaaf (PTI) which has been dubbed by the opposition as “Selected,” rather than “Elected,” due to the support given by the Pakistan Army is undertaking what is claimed as a major anti corruption campaign which is seen to supplant the old political oer with Naya or new Pakistan.
