Can PM Modi’s Corona Virus COVID 19 Joint Proposal Revive SAARC?

In a landmark initiative Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted calling for leaders of SAARC nations to chalk out strategy to fight Coronavirus, even as the organization has been moribund since 2016

SAARC or South Asia Association of Regional Cooperation that links countries in the region from Afghanistan to Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Maldives under the rubric of a regional framework has been moribund since long.

The underlying challenge has been terrorism.

SAARC has gone through troughs after Pakistan’s consistent use of terror as a strategy to get even with India and regional cooperation much less integration has invariably suffered. Be it post Mumbai 26/11 in 2008 or the Uri terror attack and India’s surgical strike in September 2016, SAARC has not been able to assemble its leaders for some time now.

India on the other hand has been focusing on BIMSTEC Bay of Bengal Multi Sectoral Initiative which also links South [less Afghanistan and Pakistan] and South East Asia with Myanmar and Thailand added as the members.....................
