Role of Community in Countering Extremist Groups

In the milieu of expanding media including the dark web, encrypted apps such as Telegram and What’s App and ability of violent extremist groups as the Islamic State of Iraq and the al Shams (ISIS) to spread their ideology using FaceBook and Twitter amongst others, the ability of the State to monitor and control is limited. This is particularly so in liberal democracies as India and Sri Lanka where the State is not inclined to control media as a practice and only notices aberrations after violations. More over with an active civil society, excessive control over public media as the internet is not practical and may in fact have a contrary impact. Groups as the ISIS exploit the so called, “soft state,” syndrome to advantage by reaching out to youth who have the inclination towards radical religious extremism.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
