India's Counter ISIS Strategy - A Primer

The bloody Easter Sunday terrorist attack in Sri Lanka on 21st April brought into focus counter ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and al Shams) or Daesh strategy in India. There were major concerns of rising influence of the Daesh [the official name with which the ISIS was to be referred to in India rather than Islamic State [IS} as that gives greater legitimacy to the terrorist group] after the spectacular rise of the group in Iraq in 2014. As the Daesh knocked on the gates of Baghdad, then newly elected government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July 2014, put into place a plan of evacuation of thousands of Indian migrants in the country. The plan was not required to be put in action given that these were mostly in areas south of Baghdad and the Daesh was blocked to the North of the Iraqi capital. Today the outfit has lost physical territory but obviously the ideology continues to have traction amongst the religious extremists..................................
