Indian Metros in 2018 – Mitigating Security, Safety and Health Hazards

India’s metropolitan cities – Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad are growth engines of the country. The combined population of India metros is over 100 million equal to some of the larger countries in the World. Each of these metros has a population varying from 8 to 20 million plus equal to some of the medium sized global economies. Packed in relatively small areas varying from 2000 to 8000 square kms, these face multiple security, safety and health challenges mitigating which assumes importance for the country’s growth trajectory. The hazards are an outcome of unregulated growth, large transient relatively rootless populace lacking common social glue, socio-economic divergences in tightly knit spaces, legacy of India’s caste and religious serrations, rising aspirations of the erstwhile underclass and corruption.......................
