S 400 – Growing Indo U.S. Differences May Hamper Defence Relations

Statements by key U.S. officials against acquisition of the S 400 by India from Russia in the past month and Indian insistence on sovereign rights in decision making raise concerns of larger impact on defence relations between the two strategic partners in the Indo Asia Pacific. The United States opposition to India's acquisition of theS 400 air and missile defence system is growing. India and Russia signed an agreement with Russia in October 2018 for the procurement of five S-400 missile systems by India at a cost of Rs 40,000 crore.
