Review of the Indian Army Land Warfare Doctrine 2018

The Indian Army Land Warfare Doctrine 2018 (ALWD) published on 27 November 2018 is a corollary to the Joint Doctrine of the Indian Armed Forces 2017 outlining the manner in which the military will prosecute operations on land. To some extent the ALWD covers some facets which could be construed as strategy but the diachronic framework needs a debate separately. A salutary element in the Doctrine is clarity and conciseness with which various issues related to war fighting have been outlined. The 3800 word document provides wide coverage of threats, role and objectives as well as capability building. The threat manifestation envisaged is cognisant with the present challenges – “collusive” across multiple fronts and domains becoming omnipresent. New forms of conflicts such as ‘Grey Zone’ warfare and Hybrid Wars are also correctly identified though elaboration of these was essential to derive at appropriate responses to meet the challenge.
