OSINT Report: India’s Counter String of Pearls Takes Shape

The Indian Ministry of Defence press office reported on 17 July that a delegation led by the Commander Combined Task Force (CTF 151), Rear Admiral Saw Shi Tat, Republic of Singapore Navy, visited INS Teg presently berthed at Djibouti harbour on 16 Jul 18.  The visit was apparently for coordination of India’s anti piracy mission which operates independently from the CTF as well as the European Union Naval Force Operation Atalanta. The visit was not uncommon but the location and its mention in the Ministry of Defence Press Release for the first time indicates that India is scaling up the process of obtaining berthing rights on a permanent basis in Djibouti, the much sought after port in the Horn of Africa. India has a tie up with French base in Djibouti for providing support to the anti piracy missions............................
