M777 Ultra-Light howitzers for Indian Army

As part of its Artillery modernization programme, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) cleared the Army’s proposal to buy 145 BAE’s M777 Ultra-Light howitzers at a cost of Rs 2,900 crore. This deal would be through Foreign Military sales but the spares, maintenance and ammunition will be procured through Indian Systems. Under the terms of the Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) signed with the US Government for supply of 145 ULH, 25 guns will be inducted in Fully Formed condition and the balance 120 guns will be assembled in India. As per website of the BAE Systems, M777 has become the benchmark for 155mm Lightweight Towed Artillery Systems required by mobile forces which can be easily transported and is used extensively by the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army as next generation Medium Force weapon...................
