Indo US Defence Ministers Meet – Defence Acquisitions Agenda

US Secretary James Mattis and Indian Minister of Defense Nirmala Sitharaman held delegation level talks at the Pentagon on 03 December. While Mattis and Sitharaman have met three times earlier this was the latter’s first official visit to the U.S. as defense minister of India. Minister Sitharaman underlined the growing military to military cooperation stating the positive developments, “We have good military-to-military cooperation, defense consultations, scientific and R&D work, defense trade, co-production and co-development, and industry collaboration”. The main agenda apparently was to finalise various acquisition programmes under discussion between the two countries as cooperation in defence trade or more correctly sales by the United  States has expanded manifold as is evident from the portfolio of the Indian armed forces. A related issue is that of the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act [CAATSA] or waivers to India for procurement of arms from Russia to facilitate payments may also be on the table...............................
