Indian Officials, Red Cross Greet Freed Pilot At Border Crossing

Indian officials, accompanied at a border crossing by representatives of the Red Cross, greeted a pilot who had been freed minutes earlier by Pakistan. "The nation is proud of your exemplary courage," Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter on March 1 after Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman walked across the Wagah crossing point into Indian territory. The handover took several hours, delayed because of procedures including a quick check of his medical condition before he was turned over to Indian officials. An official told reporters his first words were "it is good to be back in my country.".........................
