The Ministry of Defence has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for an assault rifle to identify probable vendors who can undertake the said project for response by 20 September. Total Quantity required is approximately 6, 50,000 Assault Rifles and the Request for Proposal or RFP is expected to be issued by December 2018. An examination of the RFI document and the Questionnaire denotes that the Army has finally sought to draw reasonable and practical criteria to test potential suppliers before drawing up the General Services Qualitative Requirement (GSQR). This is the third attempt by the Indian Army to issue a RFI to procure assault rifles in the last decade. The first two instances were in 2011 and 2016 but were aborted due to a number of reasons but most importantly having fixed impractical criteria.
