Indian Air Force (IAF) Expands Operational Reach in North East

 Indian Air Force (IAF) demonstrated the capability to launch fighter jets from Civilian airfields in the North East. The air force operated Sukhoi-30 fighters from Dimapur, Imphal, Guwahati and Kolkata exercise from October 16 to 19.

In the second phase airfields in Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh and Andal in West Bengal will be covered from October 29 to Novermber 1

“The exercise will familiarise the IAF crew with the procedure of flying from these busy airfields and coordinate with their civilian counterparts. It will also help familiarise the civilian functionaries at these airfields with the conduct of military operations,” the IAF spokesperson in Shillong the HQ of the Eastern Air Command said.

In the Eastern Air Command air bases Chabua and Tezpur in Assam have Su 30 MKI squadrons based while at Bagdogra in West Bengal it is proposed to locate Rafale.

In addition Hawk trainer aircraft which can be jury rigged for fighter operations is also based at Kalaikunda in West Bengal as per the Hindustan Times.

With an increase in the threat from China, the Eastern Air Command which is based in Shillong is once again in the limelight. ..........................
