India Opts for IWI Negev LMG, Confirms 7.62 mm Calibre for Small Arms

The IWI has scope for bagging larger order for 40,000 LMGs provided it is willing to established a manufacturing line in India through a joint venture.

The Ministry of Defence in a press release on 19 March indicated that the Acquisition Wing of Ministry of Defence has signed capital acquisition contract with Israel Weapons Industries for procurement of 16,479 LMGs at a cost of Rs 880 crore with the approval of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh.

The procurement was being done under the Fast Track Procedure (FTP) which reduces the time taken for acquisition.

Three LMGs were examined by the Indian team which toured to seek information of the LMGs. Arsenal of Bulgaria, IWI I Israel and S & T Motiv of South Korea were in the short list by the Ministry of Defence and the Army.
