India Japan – Special Strategic & Global Partnership or Near Alliance

The visit of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to India on 13 and 14 September was far from routine. While the annual Indo Japan leaders summit was held, there were other major landmark events that seem to suggest that India and Japan are moving from being special strategic and global partners to near allies. Indian strategic community is particularly allergic to the word alliance- being near allies may just fit the bill. While an alliance, in international relations, denotes mutual support in times of war which is formally agreed upon by both the countries and inked in a treaty agreement as between the United States and Japan or United States or South Korea, there is no such formal arrangement between India and Japan ( so far). However there are other markers.................
