India’s Dilemma of Military Intervention in Maldives – Some Key Parameters

The political situation in the Maldives an atoll nation of 300,000 plus strategically located in the Indian Ocean Region saw a dramatic shift on 01 February 2018. Hearing the opposition’s appeal to the Supreme Court to dismiss the President, the Supreme Court said the trials of former President Mohammad Nasheed and several other opposition leaders were, "questionable and politically motivated nature of the trials of the political leaders warrant a retrial". Hundreds of people poured onto the streets of the capital Malé, cheering, singing, chanting and waving flags as police started to gather near the crowds. Prayers were being recited at an opposition rally, with people saying: “The government is over Allah Akbar.”--- The opposition leader Mr Mohammad Nasheed openly called for the Indian government to send in the troops. New Delhi, however, refrained from undertaking such a course keeping on political and diplomatic pressure on the Abdullah Yameen government underlining that it would not involve in an action which could be termed as, “regime change”.------------------
