India’s Defence Capability Building- Geopolitics and Inter-operability Considerations

In tandem with the much vaunted Make in India in Defence, front line platforms and technologies for Indian Armed Forces will continue to be imported from foreign strategic partners either on government to government basis or through the commercial competitive bidding process based on the Defence Procurement Procedure 2016. India in turn is attempting to spread the risk of dependency on a single country or supplier by contracting from varied partners – Russia, United States, France, Israel and UK amongst others and thereby achieve a degree of strategic autonomy. As per IDSA Expert S Kalyanaraman, “Strategic autonomy denotes the ability of a state to pursue its national interests and adopt its preferred foreign policy without being constrained in any manner by other states”.In the globalised world of today, with supply chains spread across the world map, achieving strategic autonomy is an oxymoron. .....................Strategic autonomy in today’s context for India would imply spreading risks by leveraging buyer advantage in defence imports......................................
