Chief of Defence Staff,Delayed but Welcome Step - Durust Ayad

Chief of Defence Staff,Delayed but Welcome Step, “Durust Ayad”.Creation of the post of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) wasrecommended by Group of Ministers in 2001. A decision in this regard was to betaken after consultation with political parties.

However there continued to be a prolonged delay in deciding on the same due to lack of consensus in thepolitical parties in an era of coalition governments through which India passedthrough since the first time the decision was taken in 2001.Several GoM recommendations have been implemented, including some tri-Service structures under an integrated defence staff (IDS)led by a three-star general but NDA 1.0 faced with political-bureaucraticresistance and lack of consensus amongst the services the reform was nevertaken up.

Importantly creation of appointment of CDS was a longpending demand and was unfulfilled due to lack of political approval. With thestrong majority of the government and decisive leadership of the prime ministerit is evident that this decision has been facilitated. Finally an appropriate decision has been taken and it is hoped that the same will be implementedshortly.Political direction alone can bring about such a majorshift. ..............................
