Labour Clashes in Chinese Plant Under Construction in Payra, Bangladesh

Payra power plant a 1,320MW coal-fired thermal power plant (TPP) under construction at Dhankhali, in the Patuakhali district of Bangladesh has seen clashes between Chinese and Bangladesh workers. The police have filed cases for murder, and vandalism accusing 500/600 workers after a Chinese worker died in the incident of protests and vandalism by Bangla workers at the plant after one of their fellows died after falling in a boiler.Bangladesh China Power Company is developing the plant (BCPCL), a 50:50 joint venture between China National Machinery Import and Export (CMC) and Bangladesh’s state-owned North-West Power Generation Company (NWPGCL).Now Bangladesh authorities of Payra power plant have directed the Bangladeshi workers to leave the construction site and not return until further notice.Chinese workers meanwhile will stay at the power plant area to repair their quarters and take other preparations to resume the construction work.
