Revival of SAARC, an Economic Imperative in times of COVID 19

Despite risk of Pakistan’s Establishment – Army and ISI scuttling the move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to possibly revive SAARC through a joint COVID 19 strategy has become imperative given economic challenges impacting the region including the largest economy India.

SAARC or South Asia Association of Regional Cooperation links countries in the region from Afghanistan to Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Maldives is seen as the least integrated region in the World held hostage to India Pakistan divide on support to terrorism by Islamabad and has remained a paper tiger to say the least for the past four years without an official summit.

It seems there is a rethink at the top in India with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet on 13 March expressing a desire to activate SAARC with a view to meet the challenge arising from the deadly virus of COVID 19 or corona................
