Regional Risk Alert – Deteriorating Security Situation Raises Alarm in Afghanistan

A series of security incidents in rapid succession have led to an alarm over the rapidly deteriorating situation in Afghanistan over the past few weeks. This comes even as the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) reported 1,692 civilian deaths for the first six months of 2018. The penetration by Taliban of Ghazni City disrupting normalcy from 10-13 August, simultaneous attack on an Afghan Army Base in Faryab in the North, the eviction of the Islamic State of Khorasan (ISK) from Jawjzan province in the North by the Taliban with the ISK preferring to surrender to government troops and an attack ascribed to the ISK in Kabul on a student’s coaching centre on 15 August are indications of a rapidly deteriorating situation in Afghanistan. In an adverse development for humanitarian aid and assistance in the strife-torn country, Reuters reported that the Taliban announced that they are withdrawing security guarantee for the International Red Cross in the country to protest against the neglect of prisoners who were on a hunger strike in the Pul-e Charkhi prison in Kabul.......................
