Explainer – Why Today’s Elections in Afghanistan are Significant?

Afghans are voting for the Wolesi Jirga or Lower House of the parliament today with queues seen in front of polling booths in Kabul in the morning despite a call for boycott by the Taliban. The Elections are being held after a delay of three years with a view to establish a credible voting system thus reformation of the Independent Elections Commission (IEC) was undertaken by the National Unity Government. The Elections will take place against the background of expanding influence of the Taliban which calls itself the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. The Taliban succeeded in eliminating two key security officials in Kandahar, Brig Gen Abdul Raziq and provincial NDS chief Abdulmomin Hassankhail just two days before the elections leading to postponement of the polls by one week in this crucial southern province.
