DATA INT Report – Afghanistan Violence – Casualty Metrics Jan-Apr 2018

Afghanistan has seen sustained violence in the past couple of years. An examination of data compiled by Pajhwok Afghan News (PAN) and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan  (UNAMA) shows that there has been a steady increase in the level of violence in 2018 as compared to the first four months of 2017. PAN data team has indicated that 61 casualties occurred on a daily basis in 2018 as against 54 in 2017. The UNAMA which only records civilian casualties indicates that the trends in both years have been similar. Annual projections would reveal close to 22,000 casualties for 2018, though the violence is anticipated to increase in the coming months as the campaigning season has commenced with the Taliban announcing their spring offensive.
