Cease Fire Before Talks – Possible Paradigm of Assurance in Afghanistan

The Taliban indicated willingness to continue to talk with the US despite Washington having pulled out from the talks. The Taliban group issued a statement four days ago, stating that “We are committed to continuing negotiations till the end if a [political] settlement is chosen instead of war.” The statement further added “Islamic emirate has its own policy and a firm stance. We called for talks 20 years ago and the stance is the same today and we believe that the US is unduly coming back to its [previous] stance.”

U.S. President Donald Trump on the other hand has indicated that US and Afghan forces will launch vigourous offensives. He said, “The last four days, we have hit our enemy harder than they have ever been hit before, and that will continue.”

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has said the NATO allies and partners will continue to train and advise the Afghan security forces. ...........................
