Amidst Parallel Swearing In: Ghani Provides Two Week Window for Reconciliation

Parallel swearing in ceremonies by Ghani and Abdullah raises despondency but hopes alive for reconciliation in the coming fortnight

Incumbent President Ashraf Ghani and CEO Dr Abdullah Abdullah were sworn in as Afghanistan ‘Presidents’ in ceremonies held in parallel after controversy over Presidential elections outcome could not be resolved despite active interventions by US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad, former President Hamid Karzai amongst others.

Afghan media channel TOLOnews claimed to have seen a document in which President Ghani proposed a power-sharing plan with Chief Executive Abdullah in the areas of security, governance and peace, offering 40% of his cabinet, including one National Security Council member post for his allies

Chairmanship of a "Supreme Peace Council" was also offered to Abdullah to engage in the negotiations with the Taliban but was to work under the president.
