Afghanistan's Wholly Indigenous Elections On 26 April, Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan (IEC) released preliminary results of the Afghan Presidential elections held on 5 April. Abdullah Abdullah secured 44.9% of votes, Dr. Ashraf Ghani 31.5%, Zalmai Rassoul 11.5% and Abdul Rab Rassoul Sayyaf 7.1% of the votes. Qotbuddin Helal got 2.7% of votes; Gul Agha Sherzoi got 1.6%, Daud Sultanzoi 0.5% and Hedayat Amin Arsala 0.2% of the votes. IEC Chief, Yousuf Nuristani said 19,431 polling stations out of 20561 were open during elections day on April 5. Mr. Nuristani further added that votes of 810 polling stations were recounted in 34 provinces while votes of 525 polling stations were cancelled.
